“Self-care is really about taking care of you and focusing on feeling good about yourself – mind and body.” Franchesca Ramsey
Don’t banish your neckties to the back of the drawer! If you’ve recently lost mobility in one arm and are new to one-handed strategies, here’s a good one to add to your repertoire that will allow ease in self-care while also saving your favorite neckties.
- Step 1: To get ready, don dress shirt, button, and drape the necktie around your neck with the narrow-blade end clipped to the placket of the dress shirt. A clothespin is shown in the photo but you may use a clip of your choice.
- Step 2: Continue to tie your necktie with your favorite knot. Our model demonstrates a simple knot. He keeps the narrow-blade side of the tie clipped to the placket of the dress shirt while re-clipping to make any necessary adjustments. He then takes the broad-blade side of the tie and crosses it over the narrow-blade side.
- Step 3: Then, he passes the broad-blade side under the narrow-blade side of the necktie.
Step 4: He now passes the broad-blade side of the necktie over the narrow-blade side of the necktie.
Step 5: Then, he brings the broad-blade side under, up and over the neck opening.
Step 6: He now brings the broad-blade end through the loop at the neck.
Step 7: He continues to pull the broad-blade end through the loop.
Step 8: He further continues to pull the broad-blade end through loop.
Step 9: To cinch up the knot, re-clip the narrow-blade side of the necktie to the placket of the dress shirt as needed for proper adjustments.
Step 10: Continue to cinch up the knot while adjusting the clip on the narrow-blade side of the necktie as needed.
Step 11: Voilà! Looking snazzy.
Step 12: It’s amazing what a simple clothespin can do! Never underestimate the power of ingenuity and simple modifications that you can do to make a big difference in your activities of daily living.
Step 13: Adjust the collar.
Step 14: Continue to adjust the collar.
Don’t hesitate to bring out those neckties from the back of the drawer! One-handed strategies are available and can be added to your self-care repertoire. A clothespin or clip can help you tie a necktie with greater ease while also giving you further efficiency in self-care skills. So, remember to embrace the independence that is available to you and love the life you lead. Thank you for reading my post and visiting Human Touch, OT.
