I think, to dress oneself is an act of love. When we love ourselves enough to take care of ourselves, we start a romance with our very own hearts, minds, and bodies on a journey of self discovery.
“Come Dress Yourself In Love, Let The Journey Begin.”–Francesca de Rimini
When disease causes us to feel “dis-ease” let us look to be “at ease.” When disability causes “fragility” let us look for “ability.”
I recently twisted my ankle resulting in pain, swelling, bruising, increased sensitivity, and limited range of motion. Has something like this ever happened to you? And now, since I twisted my ankle, my entire leg hurts making it difficult to pull up pants. Instead of lamenting, I came up with a quick adaptation to stay steady and safe while dressing. A simple loop sewn inside the waistband of my pants gives me the extra arm length to pull up my pants safely. So, if you’re in a similar situation, this technique may also be helpful to you.
So, let’s get started, here’s what you’ll need:
- Pants, elastic bands (width and length depends on needs), thread, needle, sewing machine or help from friend or family member.
Here’s how to do it:
- Assemble all your materials.
- Determine width and length of elastic you’ll need—the width is determine by obtaining a comfortable grasp and length is determined by the amount you’ll need to extend your reach comfortably while securely seated.
- Determine the best location on waistband to sew elastic bands —you can pin the elastic into place and practice before sewing. Then sew elastic into waistband.

Hello,
My name is Sarah Ungvarsky and I am a 3rd year student pursuing my Doctorate of Occupational Therapy from Creighton University. I am reaching out to you because of your interest in accessible clothing design and independence. As an occupational therapy student, I find adaptive clothing plays a significant role in providing individuals the independence they need to live quality lives. As someone who has seen first-hand the benefit adaptive clothing offers to individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, I have chosen to pursue this area for my capstone project, or Doctoral Capstone Experience (DCE).
The goal of my capstone is to assess the role of occupational therapy in in adaptive clothing design and analyze the need for adaptive clothing, offering an occupational therapy perspective that will benefit clients with diverse conditions. I believe that offering this perspective will benefit both the individuals I am able to work with as well as the individuals who are looking to purchase apparel that improves independence and quality of life. I am seeking mentorship from someone who has experience and interest in adaptive clothing design and/or modifications to promote independence. I would love to share my ideas, learn more about your work, and set up a time to discuss the potential to collaborate. I know things are uncertain in the middle of the pandemic, but I would be so grateful for the opportunity to work together in whatever capacity possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I look forward to hearing from you!
