“The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with One Step.”-Lao Tzu
I sometimes make my bed lying down! Sounds like an abracadabra magic trick, but it’s only a simple approach to conserve energy. Seriously, on certain days when I have a limited amount of energy in reserve, I don’t spend it all at once, but I disperse it throughout the day.
I know there are those of you who live with spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, and even others with physical challenges whose energy is likewise a precious resource to be used sparingly, wisely, and with care! And, when you make-your-bed while you’re still in it, it’s easier than walking from side-to-side and back-and-forth to perfect each layer.
Making your bed using a simpler approach may not be perfect, but just reflect that you’re an ACTIVE participant in your own life.
After all, as Neil Armstrong said, “that’s one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind.” The pearl-of-wisdom to take away here is, “Small Steps Lead To BIG Accomplishments!”
Here’s how I do it (O.K.-My Hubby is Doing the Demo):
Step 1: To start, I come up with a basic idea of how I would like my bed to look when it’s finished. It may not have a thoroughly completed, “bounce a quarter off the mattress look,” but I just make sure it’s something that I’m pleased with and can accept as part of my daily routine.
Step 2: Then, I position myself, more-or-less, on one side of the bed and I reach out to the opposite side of the bed to pull up the sheet as far as possible while straightening out any wrinkles or folds.
Step 3: To continue, I bring the next layer of bedding, such as blanket or comforter, up and over the sheet so that all layers are aligned.
Step 4: While I’m still lying down, I attempt to make final alignments on the same side of the bed where I’m still lying.
Step 5: After all the layers have been straightened out and aligned to the best of my ability while I’m still lying down, I then sit up in bed and take a well-deserved break. When I’m ready to continue, I stand up, turn to face the bed, and make the final touches. Now, I just stand in place while turning back the layers.
Step 6: Of course, I incorporate the help of my “Canine Good Citizen” whenever possible!
Step 7: I continue making the final flourishes.
Step 8: I continue to fold over the bedding and smooth out any wrinkles.
Step 9: I breathe a big sigh of relief, and I now compare the finished bed to my desired goal, as stated in step 1, and pat myself on the back for a job well done!
It may take you a few attempts to figure out your personal style or unique way of making your bed using this approach as inspiration, but don’t quit now. And remember, “where there’s a ‘will,’ there’s a way.”
